Mō te ohu | About the team
You will join our Cultural Services Team, a dedicated group committed to the preservation, revitalisation and celebration of Ngāti Toa reo, culture, toi and identity. Within this team sits Te Ohu Reo, leading initiatives that strengthen the use, transmission and visibility of te reo Māori, particularly kōrero tuku iho of Ngāti Toa. Guided by Te Reo Manawataki o Ngāti Toa Rangatira, our iwi reo strategy, we create meaningful parthways for whānau and hapori to learn, use and embrace te reo Māori in their everyday lives.
Our team delivers a range of cultural programmes, wānanga and learning opportunities that nurture the transmission of knowledge across generations. We maintain and protect whakapapa information, support the development of traditional and contemporary toi practices, and create opportunities for whānau to engage meaningfully with their language and culture. Guided by our values and kaupapa, we work collaboratively to uphold cultural integrity and contribute to the aspirations of Ngāti Toa now and for future generations.
Mō te tūranga mahi | About the role
The Pūkenga Matua – Ohu Reo provides leadership and expertise to support the revitalisation, promotion and development of te reo Māori within Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira and across the wider Ngāti Toa community. A key focus of this role is supporting the implementation of Te Reo Manawataki o Ngāti Toa Rangatira and advancing the long-term reo aspirations of Ngāti Toa. Key responsibilities include:
· Support the implementation and ongoing development of Te Reo Manawataki o Ngāti Toa Rangatira.
· Lead the development and delivery of reo revitalisation initiatives, programmes and learning opportunities.
· Support the integration and normalisation of te reo Māori across Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira.
· Develop, review and maintain high-quality reo resources, learning materials and cultural content.
· Provide reo expertise, guidance and mentoring to kaimahi, whānau and stakeholders.
· Facilitate wānanga, classes, workshops and language learning activities.
· Monitor, evaluate and report on strategic reo outcomes.
· Build and maintain effective relationships with whānau, marae, community organisations and external partners.
· Support the preservation and transmission of Tainui reo, kawa, tikanga and mātauranga
Mōu | About you
You will bring demonstrated experience in te reo Māori revitalisation, language planning, education, community development or a related field, together with a passion for advancing the reo aspirations of Ngāti Toa. You will also bring.
· High level fluency in te reo Māori, including confident written and verbal communication.
· Ability to translate and adapt content between te reo Māori and English while maintaining cultural integrity.
· Experience designing and delivering language learning programmes, workshops or educational initiatives.
· Experience facilitating wānanga, presentations and learning experiences in te reo Māori.
· Strong understanding of tikanga Māori and kaupapa Māori approaches.
· Experience building effective relationships with whānau, communities and stakeholders.
· Ability to manage projects, priorities and reporting requirements effectively.
· Knowledge of, or commitment to deepening, Tainui reo, Ngāti Toa history, tikanga and the aspirations of Te Reo Manawataki o Ngāti Toa Rangatira.
