Join our passionate Toa Taiao team, who are dedicated to protecting and restoring our whenua, moana and taiao for future generations. Working alongside experienced kaitiaki, you'll contribute to meaningful conservation projects that blend mātauranga Māori with practical environmental management. From restoring native ecosystems and protecting taonga species to working alongside community groups and spending time on our offshore islands, every day offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact while upholding the values of Ngāti Toa.
Ko te tūranga mahi | About the role
As a Kaikōkiri Taiao, you'll play an important role in supporting the Kaiārahi Taiao to deliver environmental restoration and conservation programmes that reflect our commitment to active kaitiakitanga. Working across a variety of sites, you'll help care for our whenua and taiao while embedding Te Ao Māori, mātauranga Māori and te reo me ōna tikanga into the way we work.
In this role you will:
Support the delivery of environmental and conservation programmes, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, to agreed specifications and to a high standard.
Coordinate and work alongside community groups, volunteers and researchers to achieve shared conservation outcomes.
Oversee the completion of restoration activities including planting, weed and pest animal control as well as site maintenance contracts.
Assist with planning and coordinating staff in the field, including spending up to five days at a time living and working on Ngāti Toa's offshore islands.
Champion a strong health, safety and wellbeing culture while contributing positively to team success and organisational goals.

You'll have experience working in environmental restoration, conservation, land management or a similar field, and you'll be passionate about protecting and enhancing our natural environment. Most importantly, you'll be excited to contribute to the aspirations of Ngāti Toa while growing your knowledge of Te Ao Māori.
You'll be confident with:
Environmental restoration activities including planting, weed and pest control, and ecological monitoring.
Working outdoors in a physically demanding environment and adapting to changing conditions.
Building positive relationships with colleagues, volunteers, researchers and community groups.
Working safely, following health and safety practices, and contributing to a positive team culture.
Embracing and applying mātauranga Māori, with a willingness to develop your te reo Māori and understanding of tikanga.
