Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira is pleased to announce that Kura Toa has confirmed the current St Pius School site in Titahi Bay as the home of its new school, opening on 1 February 2027.
The announcement marks an important milestone for Kura Toa and a new chapter for education in Titahi Bay, Porirua
The Tuki Street site has been home to St Pius School since 1954. For more than 70 years, St Pius has served generations of tamariki and whānau, providing an education grounded in strong values, care and community. Its contribution to Titahi Bay and the wider Porirua community will remain an important part of the history of this site.
As the St Pius chapter draws to a close, Kura Toa has been given the opportunity to continue the site's longstanding purpose as a place of learning, growth and community.
Dr John Young, Principal St Pius X is pleased that the site and buildings will continue to be used for education. He said, " We wish Kura Toa all the best for the future. We will be working as hard as we can over the next few months to ensure the transition is smooth and effective."
Brian Lang, Chair of the Catholic Parish of Tawa and Titahi Bay Finance Committee also welcomes our new neighbour and the establishment of the new educational facility.
This transition has been made possible with the support of the Ministry of Education, the Catholic parish, the Archdiocese, St Pius School leadership and the Rūnanga, all working together with a shared commitment to acknowledging the legacy of St Pius while preparing for what comes next.
When Kura Toa opens in Term 1 of 2027, it will bring secondary education to Titahi Bay for the first time, providing a local Years 7–13 pathway for rangatahi and their whānau.
Kura Toa will offer another choice for secondary education, with a strong focus on knowing each learner, building confidence, aspiration and excellence, and connecting learning to meaningful pathways beyond school.
Kura Toa Tumuaki, Kathleen O’Hare said confirming the site is an exciting step towards opening the doors in 2027.
“We’re excited to have found a home for Kura Toa in Titahi Bay. We look forward to honouring the history of this place while creating something special for the rangatahi and whānau who will become part of Kura Toa.”
Titahi Bay School Tumuaki Matt Tiley welcomed the addition of a new secondary school pathway for local rangatahi in the community
“The opening of Kura Toa in Titahi Bay is a very special milestone. It is a fantastic addition to our local educational landscape, and we are proud to see this dream become a reality for our tamariki and community.”
Over the coming months, work will begin to prepare the site for Kura Toa, its Years 7–13 cohort, and an innovative approach to learning.
Kura Toa will officially open at Tuki Street, Titahi Bay, on 1 February 2027.
