Memorandum of Understanding for the care and wellbeing of our toanga - Kiwi Pukapuka
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary and Ngāti Toa is now in place. The purpose of the MOU is to define the relationship between Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira and The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary to ensure the overarching care and wellbeing of our taonga and to maintain good working relationships.
In May 2025 after almost a century-long absence from Te Tau Ihu, kiwi pukupuku (little spotted kiwi) were released back to Whakatū. Approximately 40 kiwi pukapuka were translocated into the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary (from their Kāpiti Island breeding ground).

Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira Poutiaki Matt Hippolite highlighted that the arrival of the kiwi pukupuku marked a significant milestone, culminating a vision that has spanned two decades. These treasured toanga have been nurtured by whānau in Kāpiti and returned to the Whakatū community. Matt saw this as an opportunity to bring Te Tau Ihu iwi and community together as we all share and ensure the protection and well-being of these toanga.
Matt was also hopeful that the manu would become so abundant within the safety of the sanctuary that they could then populate the wider area.

A new DOC Wildlife permit has also been granted for the collection of shed Kiwi Pukupuku feathers to be collected for cultural use purposes.
