The Wall Walk® is coming!

A new history curriculum was recently rolled out to schools to ensure our kids understand:

• Māori history

• The nature and impact of colonisation and settlement

• How our history has been shaped by the use of power

• Māori and Pacific activism

• How relationships and connections between people and across boundaries have been influenced by all the above and shaped us

Many of us haven’t been taught this stuff. To fill these gaps in our knowledge, and help us share it with our whānau, we are pleased to be hosting The Wall Walk®.

The Wall Walk® is an interactive workshop that takes people through key events in NZ history focussing on the relationship between Māori and the Crown. The inspirational Dr Simone Bull (Ngāti Porou) will weave a story together about the past 180 years using a wall of posters as the backdrop.

The audience helps to tell the story by getting up, in small groups, and describing a particular event. Don’t worry. You won’t be put on the spot. Before arriving you will be sent links to resources where you can learn about a major event or person who shaped our history. Then, on the day of The Wall Walk®, you will be given time to work with others and come up with a 5-minute story about that event or person. Your story can be in any form you like… a skit, waiata, quiz. HOW you do it is up to you. Anything goes, so long as it is respectful. Sim will guide you through this.

The aim is for everyone to understand the impact that government policies have had on Māori and why Aotearoa New Zealand looks and feels the way it does today – the tensions, the misunderstandings, and as we move forward, unique opportunities that become unlocked for us all when we share this history.
