The Puna Reo plays a vital role in Ngāti Toa Rangatira's reo revitalisation efforts and in the growth of our tamariki and whānau. At Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira, we celebrate te reo Māori, our Ngāti Toa identity, and take pride in our dedication to incorporating te reo Māori and tikanga into all aspects of teaching and learning.
We are currently seeking a qualified kaiako to help support the teaching of tamariki aged 0 to 5. A passion for the well-being and education of tamariki is essential, but just as important is a genuine passion for being fully immersed in a te reo Māori environment at the Puna Reo!
Ko te tūranga mahi | About the role
Kia toa, kia rere, kia Māori. Ko te whainga ia, kia tū pakari ngā tamariki, kia matatau hoki ki ngā āhuatanga o te ao Māori me te ao hurihuri. Kia whakaako i ngā tamariki i ngā kōrero whakapapa me ngā kōrero tuku iho o Ngāti Toa. Kia tupu te kaha o te kōrero Māori ki te Puna, ki te Marae, tae noa ki ngā kainga.
As a qualified kaiako you will contribute to a Ngāti Toa Rangatira early childhood development environment, for Tamariki and Whānau to learn the values, knowledge and stories, and nurture a strong identity to stand tall and proud as Ngāti Toa Rangatira. We are looking for kaimahi who are ready to immerse themselves in te reo Māori and embrace Ngāti Toa Rangatiratanga, while also possessing the skills to deliver high-quality early childhood education.
We are seeking kaimahi who;
demonstrate an understanding of and recognise the unique status of tangata whenua in Aotearoa New Zealand, through acknowledging and responding to the histories, heritages, languages and cultures of partners to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
actively contributes to; and engages in reciprocal, collaborative learning-focused relationships with Tamariki, Whānau, ngā Kaiako; support staff and other professionals.
provides a culturally responsive and engaging environment where Tamariki can be confident in their identities, languages, cultures and abilities.
Application requirements
To apply for a qualified kaiako position with Te Puna Reo o Ngāti Toa Rangatira, it essential that applicants hold (and attach copies of):
· Diploma or Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood Teaching, Level 7 or above (studied in NZ or with NZQA Equivalency)
· Registration and Current Practising Certificate
· Current First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain one
· Eligibility to work in NZ
· Matatau i te reo Māori
When applying, please include a full work history with your cover letter and C.V., detailing the length of each role. This is a requirement of the Vulnerable Children’s Act 2014, and providing this information upfront will help speed up the process if your application is successful.
Additionally, please provide two referees who can speak to your Kaiako practice and/or your suitability for the position

Your high-level experience and professional expertise in teaching tamariki is a given, and you will be excited to engage and learn alongside Ngāti Toa. Of course, you’ll be well practiced with/in
· Successfully implementing Te Whāriki within all aspects of teaching and learning
· Supporting tamariki with a powerful sense of identify, language and culture as Māori
· Working collaboratively in a team environment
