Moemoeā

Our moemoeā is that the natural environments of te rohe o Ngāti Toa are kept or returned to health and we continue to act as kaitiaki and leaders for our taiao and its protection for future generations.

The Treaty and Strategic Relationships Team's primary focus is to lead and maintain the protection of our natural environments (our moana, awa, maunga and whenua) on behalf of Ngāti Toa Rangatira.

Our strategic objectives are:

Aonui - reclaimed matauranga relevant to te iwi o Ngāti Toa Rangatira
Kaitiakitanga - empowered leaders and co-managers of our natural environment
Whakauka - our commitment to environmental sustainability
Urutau - our ability to the impacts of climate change.

Kaitiakitanga

The Treaty and Strategic Relationships Team carries out a number of kaitiaki functions including:

  • Reviewing and presenting a position on Resource Management Consents that impact Ngāti Toa
  • Building strategic relationships with our treaty partners (local and central Government) to influence and lead the protection of our natural environments
  • Building the capability of uri o Ngāti Toa in environmental management
  • Developing opportunities for Ngāti Toa to exercise our role as kaitiaki
  • Promoting the overall sustainability of the envrironment.

We believe these opportunities may be realised through education, active kaitiakitanga, contract operations, management, restoration and involvement with other community groups.
