Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira goes from financial strength to strengh

Rāmere, 19 Poutū-te-rangi 2021 (Friday 19 March)

Over the last 12 months, our Strategic Business Plan has guided everything that Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira does and delivers, including our commitment to growing the strength of our iwi asset base.

Through He Mahi Whakapakari (our transformation programme) the Rūnanga board has invested $4.1 million in additional expenditure to support our growth and development and the delivery of our five focus areas: Te Ao Turoa, Ohanga, Oranga, Whai Mana and Ngāti Toa Rangatiratanga.

The funding for this investment has come from the Rūnanga’s own reserves, and has seen He Mahi Whakapakari recruit new staff and resources to truly breath life into our aspirations. During this short time, the Rūnanga Board investment in He Mahi Whakapakari has seen us achieve some outstanding results.

A key priority for Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira has been to ensure the cost to transform our organisation does not draw on our hard fought Treaty Settlement assets, and that we do not take on any debt to cover any of our operating costs. We have stayed true to this commitment to protect our Treaty Settlement assets for the benefit of future generations.

We have assets of $240 million and this continues to grow. Our core settment capital is protected within a trust and is invested in responsibly managed investment funds, commercial property leases including forestry, and recent business acquisitions such as the Whitby Lakes Retirement Village.

This year we have recorded a record surplus of $8.4 million that includes strong fisheries prices, increased commercial rents and strong investment returns, as well as an increase in contracts across our Health, Social Services, and Employment and Education Services. 75% of our revenue comes from government contracts which pay our staff, operating costs and overheads. So far this year, we’ve increased our contract revenue by nearly 60% through contracts to deliver services to our whānau and the communities we serve.

Additional to this success is that we now have the capability and capacity to realise the benefits of further changes to the way we operate and the services we provide.

We still have plenty of work to do, but Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira is proud to confirm that we are on track to deliver strong results for Ngāti Toa this year, both financially and in delivery of services to our iwi and whānau.
